to teach yourselfSoftware.1. begin by figuring out what you need to do. Don’t bring a tank to water balloon fight. Find the most simple and easy to use software to do what you want to do2. But then maybe what you think you want to do, is not actually what you should be doing. To you and your mom and your girlfriend the cut off head of your dog on uncle’s body you made in MS Paint might be hilarious. But when it comes to extorting money from your boss by doctoring photos of them in the back parking lot sniffing the cremation remains of Abraham Lincoln. Well you might need something better.3. OK….so you’ve figured out you need something more advanced. How do you learn software in just a few days.4. First….. you should know. YOU DON’T. Good Software is designed to be deep. Meaning that you might be able to open and save something, or resize or make an audio clip. But that doesn’t mean you know how to use it.5. Begin by playing. Make something. Anything. It will make you feel better. And then you’ll hit a brick wall. Like learning French by going to France. They will teach you how to say hello and I’m sorry, but after that they just laugh and try to trip you as you walk down the steps of some lame museum gift shop.6. What are the common features of most software packages? Look at the buttons stupid. Well it isn’t that you are stupid….you just smell that way is all.7. You’d better save your work damnit. And save it five thousand million billion quadrillion times. The law of averages suggests that eventually you will do something right…so saving all the time with various file names means you will save the right version……eventually.8. Try the help file. I know…this seems obvious….but you don’t do it. I have no idea why, but you don’t. lame lame you.9. Ok so the help section sucks…..yes we know.10. Search it damnit….but then how do you do a good search? Try specific and general. Let’s try it now.11. Join forums and ask the damn question. People out there will eventually answer. Cause you know. People are ego maniacs.12. Don’t fear the tutorial books and the video tutorials. Once you learn the task you needed to learn. Try these as well. Feel free to skip ahead and jump around!13. You don’t always have to take a course!!! Cause they are just going to do the above anyway.14. And remember, as soon as you learn that software, either a new package will come along or a new version will replace it. 15. It is all about content damnit.

150 MILES FROM BROKEN ROAD

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392530780035767410" style="DISPLAY: block; Secondly, the essay will talk about the using of the internet in terms of politicians, parties and political campaigning. Furthermore, the essay will discuss the concerns of limiting of the internet and unequal access to the internet and censorship. Additionally, the essay willl discuss rethinking about the nature of political because of the revolution of the new communication.

The most important revolution in communication technology was the Internet which arrived in 1990s. It came from being the retreat of computer experts to a mainstream medium. Eventually the internet will take its place alongside the press, television and radio as a medium of mass communication. As legions of citizens flocked on-line and dramatically increased Internet traffic, media organisations such as private, businesses and individuals quickly established a presence in the Internet. Political people also joined as well. Government departments and agencies also established their web sites to show and explain government programs and provide on-line services. Political parties and candidates launched web sites to assist campaigns ( Jansen, H 2001)). In this rush of intervention of politics in the Internet has changed political processes from the old traditional way.

This new kind of internet democracy (E-democracy) represents a new force of the communication revolution especially with democratic politicians with their own political process with local communities and countries and on the international stage (Gunter, B 2006). "Not only were candidates nearly universally distributing their messages through the Internet , but their potential audience for on-line political communication had mushroom." ( Bimber, B and Davis, R 2003,p.4)). Politicians can organise and express their views for citizens. The candidates can use political web ‘portals’ which can provide interest citizens with up-to-the minute information that is fundamentally the way citizens heard about and get involved in important issues. Equally important are some web sites which can match a voter’s views on issues with different candidates. It is a kind of “comparison shopping” which will empower voters by allowing them to obtain old and current information about between candidates, and to make informed decisions at election time.(www.alanpeto.com/ ) Furthermore, the Internet may also serve a medium for voter registration and online voting and because of that suggests a greater and more active citizen participation in the democratic electoral process. Voters will be able to cast their ballots from the convenience of their home or a nearby public facility.

However, there are concerns about unequal access to the Internet which emphasizes about people who have the Internet and those who cannot especially who cannot vote from home. A case for point such as those who cannot vote from home will have to go to public spaces such as Internet cafes or universities where they might allow other people at those places who can inappropriate influence over those people, in a situation which doesn’t arise in the traditional voting station (Rubin, 2000). For example, the USA Federal Election Commission in the Arizona Primary election (Dixon, 2001:5). Lawsuits were filed against the organisers of the Arizona Democratic Party Nomination because of the inability of those without computers to vote (Dixon, 2001:17). Also, an equally important was the concerns about fear of censorship or punishment especially people using web sites which the government does like it.

In the Australian Constitution, the idea of freedom of speech is a human right to voice one’s opinion publicly without fear of censorship or punishment. "In Australia and in other western democracies it is possible to identify a core of rights without which we would not accept that government was really democratic.” (Saunders 2003). We can ponder and discussion at any topic in our democracy way without fear. To be able “To convince and the willingness to be convinced are what provide the give and take that makes democracy something for all citizens. And that requires access to free speech.” ( Gilmore, J www.toad.com/ ).
But, in contrast, according to Roy Jordan (Free speech and the constitution 2002) Australia has no free legal free speech because, “No government has implemented the free speech provisions and therefore they are not enforceable by Australian courts. Only recently did the high Court find that free political expression was implied by the constitution.” Yet the Australian Federal Government is pushing forward with a plan called ‘Clean Feed’ to force Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to censor the Internet for all Australians. Communication Minister Stephen Conroy is determined to force this filter into Australian homes despite being almost universally condemned by the Australian public according to web site, No Clean Feed. (www.aph.gov.au/LIBRARY/Pubs/RN/2001-02/02rn42.)

It is suggested that some Australians are being compared to undemocratic Government China who has a longstanding set of policies restricting the information including the Internet to which citizen’s are exposed. Their own government-connected Internet Society of China has asked Internet service providers and content creators to sign a pledge including self-filtering. (Suisheng, Z 2006)It real shows that China‘s government can limit the Internet especially about some web sites who they don't like it.

In conclusion, the new revolution in communication technology has changed political process forever especially citizens using on-line politics instead of the traditional way. It has been suggested (Bruce Bimber, Richard Davis 2003, p.4)) that on-line has greater and more active citizen participation in the democratic electoral process than before. And also the Internet might rival the television and radio combined as well. But, equally important, there are concerns about unequal access to the Intenet and censorship such as filtering web sites by governments. Because of this revolution we should rethink about the nature of the old political ways. For example, Ken Carty's (1988) analysis of the Canadian party systems was linked in communications technology which changed in the Canadian national party system. Like the development of radio coincided had change from a local to a regional party focus while the emergence of television helped to make Canadian politics more national and more leader-driven than before. And also this cross-border network of global places has created the formation of new types of ‘global politics of places which contest a corporate globalisation. This link in this new communication with global politics shows how politics has changed forever.

REFERENCE LIST

Bimber, B, & Davis, R 2003, Campaigning online: the Internet in U.S. elections, Oxford University Press, New York.

Gilmore J, www. toad.com/ gnu/

Jansen, H 2004, 'Is the Internet Politics as usual or Democracy's Future?',
The Innovation Journal: The Public Sector Innovation Journal, Vol.9.

Jordan, R 2002, 'Free Speech and the Constitution', Vol. 42, Dept. of Parliamentary Library.

Saunders, C 2003, ‘It’s your constitution: Governing Australia Today’, 3rdn, Southwood Press Pty Ltd, Marrickville, NSW.

Jordan, R 2002, ‘Free Speech and the Constitution’, Vol 42, Dept. of Parliamentary Library.www. I knew that some of the New Communication Technologies such as CD-ROM, and Internet I knew but some of them I did not know such as social networks, Weblogs and interactive TV.
I really enjoyed the lectures such as defining Communication and Technology especially about convergence. I did not know converge meant. Now I know: it s to draw together telephone, radio, television and print that they can be accessed from the one point such as the computer or the mobile. I also liked the history of computing and the Internet. It was interesting that Charles Babbage sketched out the logical structure of the modern computer and the idea came from RAND corporation in the 1960s.
I also enjoyed about the ‘Language of the Screen.’ I put some uploaded shot sizes into my blog from the web in my tutorial class. And for the first time I set- up my blog and running it too. It was exciting for me especially editing converge pictures and embedding videos into my blog in my tutorial class. It was interesting in the Scavenger Hunt. To find the answers from questions without Google. I also enjoyed creating maps and embedding my videos in i.report web.
So I real enjoyed the course. The only think about it was that were no readings in the tutorial classes.
GAPS IN THE MASS MEDIA

<img Media.’ That is a number of theoretical contrasts and interventions suggest that there may be ways of deliberation arena, or the public sphere to extended through the application of new communication technologies and the power appreciationof the audience.
Some of the theorists have argued is the potential to remake is ‘the public sphere’(Habermas 1989). It is a way of theorizing out relationship between media, politics and society.
While Marshall McLuhan argued that ‘electricity decentralized and not centralize raised the possibility that the electronic media may opening involvement in a space comparable to the public sphere. This developed that we are witnessing now ‘the second media age, and supplanting the first media age of decentalising broadcast media arising from some sources to many consumers, according to Mark Posters. This second media will eventually be readily accessible and make a new politics based of the communication of many to many.
It is very interesting.
Also I was interesting about ‘Citizen-Hacker: Doing Global Democracy.’ The Hacker has cleared one space and recreated the citizen to exercise free speech in the emerging in formation regime.
Hackers are working on the free speech frontier,’ opposing the re-establishment of rights in the newly emerging information society(Taylor 1999:61). They refuse to accept ‘official’ story at face value-to find their own truth. It
Because of Hackers it draw spaces and directs information which open democratic potentialities.
Hackers really are trying to free information to the public. They are searching the most concise programming solution, using simplicity to hack out through the complexity. The are trying to access to computers as free and open as possible.
All of this is interesting.
What do you think of the Australian Government’s plan to censor the internet (the so called “Clean Feed’)?
It is good for censorship from the Australian Government if they filter sexually explicit materials such as child pornography, bestiality and violent pornography. But if it pose a threat to our democratic freedoms, I would say no. I don’t want Australia to join a censorship club such as China, Iran and North Korea. For example, the prohibited sites will probably be secret, so it will be hard to know what content the government has banned. So It is t dangerous to censorship the internet from the Australian government.

What place does censorship have in democracy?
None. No person can achieve his own happiness if he is prohibited from acting his rational decisions especially by the government. Freedom is control over ones own life, liberty, etc. Without freedom , a person’s mind is paralyzed; being depend on others, like being a vegetable. Democracy is about freedom . We can decide what we like or not. So we don’t need censorship from the government at all.

<param name="movie" We consume professionally created, produced and edited content from tradition and new media producers.

The ‘big’ screens of life

· Cinema (shared with other members of the public)
· TV (shared privately within our homes)
· PC (personal or shared use)

The ‘small’ screens of life

· Personal Media Players (iPods0
· Mobile phones & Smartphones (iphones etc)

Consumption is becoming increasingly personal such as mobile devices (iPods, mobile phones-iTunes, App Stores & 3g Portals)

News & Information are very important, through mobile internet & 3g Portal News & Sport services, however, entertainment is lacking.

Consumers within a ‘niche-market’ are producing ‘fan-films’/’fan-edits’ which are, in turn, being consumed by that that same ‘niche-market’.

e.g. Star Wars fans, producing ‘TROOPS’ a Star Wars ‘fan-film’ that is then consumed by the Star Wars fans.

The Trailer Mash is a website totally devoted to collecting recut trailers and trailer mash-ups.

News is a booming area for mobile content production. ‘News Junkies’ are responsible for a multitude of mobile news broadcasts & we can sometimes even see ‘shot-on-a-mobile-phone’ on actual TV news programs.

Consumers producing entertainment content on the mobile phone looks & sounds terrible. ‘Cell=Phone-Movie’ festivals have sprung up over the last 5 years. Most have disappeared just as quick.
E.g a short-film shot on a mobile phone.

PRODUCE

Consumers have traditionally been passive receivers of content (i.e. content has been broadcast to the user).

Consumers are increasingly involved in the production of products and they also produce their own identities in the process of consuming and producing products. (Facebook, YouTube etc)

Most of the entertainment we produce is too long-form & not readily accessible via mobile networks. As producers we need to begin to think about shorter forms of entertainment.

Fan films & Fan edits
www.fanfilms.net

280 Days Later-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5ELvzHa7gM

Mash-ups, Re-Genres & It's about strangers who collide together in a train. At first, they were very suspicious to each other because of their different culture and their coloured skin. Until new strangers arrived. To them , the new strangers seemed more violent than the other ones who arrived before. It was a very short thriller movie with a heart-stopping final moment.

The short film "Fred Astaire in Smooth Criminal' was very clever. It was clever because CFS has edited a contemporary music from a 1987 Michael Jackson video with a 1953 musical movie 'The Band Wagon.' In this short movie, Fred Astaire was dancing with Cyde Charisse with Michael Jackson's song, Smooth Criminal. But the beginnings of the computer is in pre-history with the abacus around about c.3000 B.C. and also
Charles Babbage who was the inventor of the first digital computer. He actual outline the logical structure of the modern computer in early 1800’s especially about the analytical engine. He was aided by an aristocratic woman, Ada Byron who became the first idea of a machine and to be able to compose and play music including graphics in a routine way as well as being the first idea of a computer program.
Alan During, born in England, clarifyed the computable of numbers and the possibility of a machine to compute them in his work, On Computable Numbers. While during the Second World war, he worked at Bletchery Park with a couple of teams which devised the first computer which they managed to break secret German
‘Enigma’ codes.

IBM produced the first commercially computer in the world in the 1950’s. The first computers were very large and expensive machines which were used for military, corporate and government works. Gordon Moore, in 1965, suggested Moore’s law: double every two years of the ability of the microchip.

In the early 70’s, at Exorox PARC, a team developed ideas such as the mouse, the graphical user interface and pull-down menus and also to be able to use it in the general user. Then, in 1975 the first personal computer was released, but, unfortunately, it had a problem because they didn’t have a language to communicate from the user to the computer. Bill Gates started writing a language called BASIC for the Altair which can be used to simple applications such as word processing, basic accounting and games. He then started his little company-Microsoft to market it to the world. More and more companies joined the PC industry.
A few computer nerds began to have ‘Home Brew’ meetings in a regular way. Eventually, they displaced their latest and greatest home-made PCs. From these meetings, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak began to start their own little company-Apple. Eventually their apple II was launched at the West Coast Computer Fair in 1978. Dealers and distributors aligned it up. After that, Apple became a huge company, especially, in 1979, when they paid a`’killer application’ called Viscalc, which made the PC from` a toy into a business tool.

Around about 1980, IBM began to get into the PC market. Frank Carey and Bill Lowe developed a product called open architecture-of by buying shelf products from a range of other companies and putting them together as a package. At the time, they had no problem about hardware; but it was the software. To run computers they needed two types of software :the language and` the operating System.

Bill Gates bought an operating System with his Microsoft. It was called Kudos. IBM agreed with Bill Gates and eventually was running as PC DOS 1.0 and licensed out into the marketplace. After result, IBM gained the most market share-largely through its association with the software Microsoft. Also, eventually, they also came up their own GUI (graphical User Interface)-windows like Apple.

In 1991, Linus Torvalds, A Finnish programmer, build his own operating system. He put his new system on the internet and then lots of people contributed to the development of the Linus kernel. He also discovered a free operating system parts in the GNU project. It became the operating system called GNU/Linus. It spread quickly across the world especially when it was less expensive to other operating systems.

INTERNET

The internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks which includes servers, mainframes and personal computers and other communication devices interconnected by the telephone system, broad-band cable and satellite services, to connect people around the world within information-sharing system. This system is linked together by a globally address space based on the Internet Protocol (IP) and is able to support communications using the (TCP/IP) and/or IP-compatible protocols and also provides either publicly or privately services layered on the communications
and related intrastructure.

In the 1960’s RAND corporation who came the idea of the internet. They developed a scheme for a communication, command and control network that could survive a nuclear war because it had no central control.

A group of researchers were working on a system of breaking down messages into small lumps and transmitting them from one computer to another. They thought might work for connecting computer systems across long distances. They made a deal with the people at RAND and then they began to apply existing ideas to the problem of ‘networking’.

The US Dept of Defence of networking was hi-jacked by researchers to share information at a distance. This developed ARPANET. They were more about downloading academic data but the early designers and users added extra functions such as email, Bulletin Board Servers and MUDS-Multiple Use Domains.

Actual, The internet is not a proper noun for something which means that word internet does not have a capital ‘I’.

WORLD WIDE WEB (WWW, Web)

One particular use of the internet is the The World Wide Web. It emerged in the 1990’s. The web merges the techniques of internetworking and hypertext which made it easy to use it. The Web includes all the internet sites that people have made available on servers around the world.
Then in the early 1990’sa brought ‘browsers’ to access the Web. The language in which web pages are written is called Hyper Text Mark-up (HTML). To view web pages, HTML format simply click ‘view’ on the browser and then ‘Source’. Many web-authoring programs will allow us to write HYML without leaving your own environment. You can get free space to launch your own homepage from your Internet Service Provider.

The Internet is not the same thing as the Web. The web is just one part of the broader internet which includes other things as well as the Web. We should think of the internet as a collection of computers. Every website is just a collection of files that exists on a computer somewhere. When we use a web browser we are really looking at ‘webpage’ files and not the other files on the computer. The web browser only looks for the things it knows how to display.

CYBERSPACE

In 1972 Karl Popper wrote about the nature of reality as being divided into three worlds: the objective world of natural things and their physical properties; subjective consciousness intentions, calculations, feelings, dreams, thoughts, etc in individuals minds, and; the public structures produced by living minds interacting with each other and the real world. The end of the subsets are abstract such religion, language, etc. Cyberspace is the latest one.

William Gibson’s work owes that idea of Cyberspace. He got that idea from cybernetics (the study of particular types of systems of control and communication to living organisms and machines and extrapolated it . In this context he developed the idea of Cyberspace in his book (Neurmancer).
It is kind of idea of ‘consensual hallucination’ or another form of reality. But there is a distinguished between virtual communities of cyberspace from virtual reality.

EARLY INTERNET APPLICATIONS

Email is a virtual mail system which se
nds documents from one sender to either one or multiple receivers. It also has junk mail (spam) which clogged up our mail box. Email viruses, Worms and Trojans has an issue because it reacts of certain window programs.

Much email is now written and read via the WWW. Webmail can create many accounts at a range of hosts and use them for particular purposes to keep different email separate such as Gmail.

We can send lumps of information, attach files with images, animation, video, worksheets, etc. Many mail applications allow the user to use Encryption so that the mail is less likely to be intercepted and opened by an unintended receiver. You can keep emails in mail folders such addresses in address books.

Asynchronous medium-means that people communicating via email can send emails that the other person can go and read whenever they please without necessarily occur in real-time.

FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL (FTP)

File Transfer Protocol is a system which allows us to directly download files from another computer onto are computer with minimal requirements for compatibility. It can also to upload a file on to a server. This application forms the basis for the Peer-to-Peer programs. (Hotline, Napster)

INTERNET RELAY CHAT (IRC)

IRC is a real time chat system in 1990’s. It allowed people to type to each other. It is called ‘Synchronous’ medium of communication for chatting. It also it can transfer files too.
The user on-line have no distance-‘cyberspace’ exists in a nowhere void. In IRC we are an abstract entity interacting with other abstract entities. For example, you can go into your virtual house, added a baby or two.

There are many internet chat networks which exist in the world. To use IRC you need to get an IRC client which will then allow you to get onto IRC networks. ‘Chat rooms’ are named as ‘channels’.

MUDS, MOOS, MUSHES, ETC

These are all variants on the same kind of program (MUDS). These were the first of the internet massive multi-user online role playing games. They are text only. So when you log into the game you would be presented with a text description of the ‘room’ you are in, and you would type commands that describe how you interact with the world.

convergent communication technology

INTRODUCTION TO NEW COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES

Such as:

CD-ROM multimedia Internet

Telepresencing interactive TV virtual reality

Videoconferencing wireless SMS-text messaging

Broadband wikis weblogs

Social networks YouTube Twitter

WHAT ARE OLD COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES?

Around about 2nd century B.C. there was a complex mechanical ‘computer’ which tracks the cycles of the solar system. It is called The Antikyhera Mechanism which was found by sponge divers at the bottom of the sea near the island of Antikyhera.

DEFINING COMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGIES

Communication is the process of imparting or conferring, or delivering, from one to another person or people.

Aristotle ‘s book, Rhetoric, explained the basic model of communication about two and half thousand years ago.

The speaker produces a message that is heard by the listener. It is simple where communication is face to face and the communicators have a common background.
But the world is now more complex; Shannon and Weaver’s book The Mathematical Theory of communication suggest a better model:

The speaker generates an effect on the transmitter which sends a message that is intercepted by the receiver which converts it into an effect that is heard by the listener. The Shannon and Weaver model detracts some factors that further complicates the communication process:

INTERSUBJECTIVITY

-the listener interprets the message and changes it as they send it along
-communication is between people and they always to argue about things, interpreting them in the light of their own experience
-the active audience produces feedback

INTERTEXTUALITY

-no message is ever complete
-any message gains its meaning from all the other messages that person has previously received and sent

Since the invention of the radio, new communication technologies are becoming more and more interactive and so accentuate of the problem of interpretation.

TECHNOLOGY

Technology is the science or study of the practical or industrial arts and their application to the world.

Technologies are extensions of human body such as a tool is an extension of the hand, a wheel is an extension of the leg; and a book is an extension of the eye, argued by Marshall McLuhan.

Stelac, an Australian-based performance artist whose work addresses this idea of technology as extensions of the human body.

McLuhan argues that ‘the medium is the message’; as an extension of the mind, the medium which that communication occurs is, itself, the message. Such as, the possibilities in the move from analog to digital technology.

ANALOG technology functions by representing different forces via dials and the relatively imprecise modulation of those forces, while the DIGITAL technology relies on storing bits of binary (having two distinct parts or components) information and allows for the precise modification of forces.

Analog to digital can be good (as in linear to non-linear video editing) or not
(Try tuning a digital car radio while driving along). There are those that the texture of analog more appealing than the certainty and flat surfaces of the digital domain such as the modulated electronic sounds of the Thermin or the Moog.

Applying the ideas from McLuhan, from analog to digital, we maybe moving from representation old communication technology that allows many shades of grey to a much more black and white, on and off digital system that after all is said and done encourages us to communicate exactly what we mean.

For example, the difference between these by looking closely at photograph taken on a regular non-digital camera. Compare that to a black and white photo from a newspaper, being the same photo, and you can see that the newspaper photo is made up of lots of dots. The dots in the newspaper photos represent the way digital media capture our experience the world as many reckon samples. In the old photograph it captures a much more continuous photo.

CONVERGENCE

There is a growing tendency to Convergence, since ten years before, as the possibilities of communication technology develop. This ideas works on a number of levels.

Information technologies are converging as computer technology provides the means together telephone, radio, radio, television and print so that they can be accessed from the one point. Communication is converging as the different media are joined together into multimedia, providing complex, interactive means of communication integrating vision, sound and text. Businesses are also converging, using new technologies to create horizontal and vertical integration.

CONTOURS OF THE COMMUNICATION DISCIPLINE

The 20th century saw the development of mass society and an explosion of broadcast media forms where messages were distributed from centralized sources to audiences to audiences around the world. A number of sometimes competing, sometimes compatible academic disciplines have sprung up to investigate issues around communication, suchas, communication studies, media studies and cultural studies.

At the same time these ‘studies’ disciplines were establishing themselves, a number of more practically-orientated, job-focussed disciplines have emerged, such as, journalism, public relations, advertising, marketing, and design.

Also the rise of computors and other communications technologies have spawned new areas of investigation , such as, new media studies, cyberstudies, internet studies, cyberculture studies and web studies.

This mass of disciplines is what the academic study of communication has come to after a century.

COMPUTER MUSIC, PICTURES

IMAGES

To create a new picture story, the first thing is to import pictures into the Desktop in the computer. This process allows import of image formats, such as .bmp,.jpeg, .tif, etc. Then simply click the picture and then click Edit. If the colour , or size of the image are less than ideal, select picture and then select colour or size. You can correct the colour balance of the image or change it as well. You can also crop the picture in crop settings, To put the picture to the weblog, you just copy the image to the NEW POST in the weblog.
